Top two spots remain unchanged following exciting Week 16

Following an impressive one-win, one-draw week, Greenville Triumph SC retains its position atop the league table and the Power Rankings.

Greenville started the week with a thrilling 5-5 draw with South Georgia on Wednesday to record both the club record for most goals scored in a single match and league record for combined goals scored.

Continuing his impressive debut season, Player of the Week Jacob Labovitz guided Greenville to a 3-1 win over Richmond on Saturday with his first professional hat trick. Labovitz’s three-goal outing is just the second time in league history that a first-year professional recorded a hat trick and the first since Ricardo Pepi tallied a hat trick in North Texas SC’s inaugural match on March 30, 2019.

The Red Wolves see the biggest rise after snapping their losing streak with a win against NCFC, while North Carolina FC and the Charlotte Independence see a steep decline following a pair of respective losses.

Summary

1 Greenville Triumph SC
(9-4-4)
Week 16: T @ TRM, W @ RIC

Last Week: 1
Highest Ranking: 1
Unbeaten in seven consecutive matches, Triumph SC conceded a tough, yet record-breaking, 5-5 draw against Tormenta FC before topping the second-place Kickers in a solid Week 16 for John Harkes’ boys.
2 Richmond Kickers
(7-5-4)
Week 16: L v. GVL

Last Week: 2
Highest Ranking: 1
In front of over 4,000 at City Stadium, the Kickers came up just short against a surging Greenville side. Despite controlling possession for the duration of the match, the Richmond defense had no answer for Jacob Labovitz.
3 Forward Madison FC
(6-4-5)
Week 16: W v. TRM
2
Last Week: 5
Highest Ranking: 3
The ‘Mingos must feel confident that they can play with just about anyone. With five wins in its last seven including victories over Greenville, Richmond and South Georgia, FMFC are set to face a Union Omaha side that has historically struggled against Madison.
4 Union Omaha
(5-2-6)
Week 16: W v. TUC
1
Last Week: 3
Highest Ranking: 2
Still with the fewest matches played of any club in the league, Union Omaha have plenty of time to make up the 10-point difference at the top of the table. Despite its four-match unbeaten streak, it may be a bit concerning that in its last three matches – all against the trio at the bottom of the table – Omaha only managed five points and three goals.
5 South Georgia Tormenta FC
(5-5-6)
Week 16: T v. GVL, L @ MAD
1
Last Week: 6
Highest Ranking: 2
A rollercoaster of a week for Tormenta FC saw the side claw its way out of a four-goal hole to steal a point from Greenville before falling to Madison on the road. Still though, its recent run of form has been solid.
6 Chattanooga Red Wolves SC
(6-8-2)
Week 16: W v. NC
3
Last Week: 9
Highest Ranking: 1
Despite equaling Tucson’s league-high eight losses, Chattanooga are just one win away from third place. The Red Wolves snapped their losing streak last weekend against a struggling NCFC side.
7 Central Valley Fuego FC
(5-5-5)
Week 16: W @ NCO
1
Last Week: 8
Highest Ranking: 1
After averaging nearly two goals per contest in the first seven matches of league play, Fuego FC have cooled off considerably, averaging just 0.75 per contest in its last eight. That number’s a bit concerning when you have the likes of Villyan Bijev and Christian Chaney up top.
8 North Carolina FC
(5-7-3)
Week 16: L @ CHA
4
Last Week: 4
Highest Ranking: 2
No club has gone longer without a win than NCFC. Although they’ve faced higher quality opponents in recent weeks, North Carolina’s attacking unit has gone relatively quiet as of late.
9 Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC
(5-6-5)
Week 16: L v. CV, W v. CLT
1
Last Week: 10
Highest Ranking: 5
Earning its first win of the month last weekend, the Hailstorm have a gauntlet of a schedule coming up as they face five straight opponents in current playoff positions.
10 Charlotte Independence
(5-7-4)
Week 16: L @ NCO
3
Last Week: 7
Highest Ranking: 1
Charlotte goes from looking like they can drop 10 on its opponent to looking like it can concede just as many in a matter of a week. It’s hard to tell what to make of Mike Jeffries' side, especially with the fluctuation of players.
11 FC Tucson
(3-8-4)
Week 16: L @ OMA

Last Week: 11
Highest Ranking: 7
Tucson again faltered late, allowing Omaha to snag all three points. With all but two of their 15 matches decided by one goal or less, Tucson’s inability to find the back of the net isn’t helping the side’s chances.
