Six-point week puts Kickers back on top in battle with Greenville

The Richmond Kickers and Greenville Triumph SC continue to joust at the top of the USL League One standings, but after a six-point week it’s the Kickers’ turn to sits on top of the League One Power Rankings, nudging the three-time finalists into the No. 2 spot.

After edging past FC Tucson on the road in midweek, the Kickers romped to victory on Saturday night back on home turf as Emiliano Terzaghi closed the gap at the top of the Golden Boot race to one goal. Greenville’s still undefeated in its last four, but its 1-1 draw against Tucson in its trip out West on Sunday night gives Richmond the edge this week.

Elsewhere, we’ve got incremental movement as Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC gets a two-position bump to No. 7 after defeating Chattanooga Red Wolves SC on Thursday and joining the tightly-packed playoff race. North Carolina, meanwhile, drops a couple of places after conceding seven goals over its two outings to land on a three-game losing streak.

Summary

1 Richmond Kickers
(7-4-3)
Week 14: W @ TUC, W v. NC
1
Last Week: 2
Highest Ranking: 1
Two wins last week see the Kickers rise to the top of the power rankings. An emphatic 4-1 win over North Carolina FC means Richmond is now the highest-scoring offense in the league.
2 Greenville Triumph SC
(7-4-3)
Week 14: W v. NC, T @ TUC
1
Last Week: 1
Highest Ranking: 1
Greenville picked up four points last week, but conceding late in a 1-1 draw in Tucson may Triumph SC feeling a little disappointed.
3 Union Omaha
(4-2-5)
Week 14: T v. CLT
1
Last Week: 4
Highest Ranking: 2
Los Buhos played out a scoreless draw at home against Charlotte. It’s not a result to write home about, but enough for Omaha to take advantage of North Carolina FC’s back week.
4 Central Valley Fuego FC
(4-4-5)
Week 14: L v. TRM
1
Last Week: 5
Highest Ranking: 1
Fuego FC was unfortunate to run into a red-hot goalkeeper this week in Tormenta FC’s Pablo Jara. Central Valley deserved more than 1-0 loss in that match.
5 North Carolina FC
(5-6-2)
Week 14: L @ GVL, L @ RIC
2
Last Week: 3
Highest Ranking: 2
NCFC had a very bad week. A 3-1 loss to Greenville and then a 4-1 loss to Richmond showed this team is not yet in the elite category.
6 Chattanooga Red Wolves SC
(5-7-2)
Week 14: L @ NCO

Last Week: 6
Highest Ranking: 1
Chattanooga lost 2-1 in Colorado, but looked relatively strong in attack for portions of the match.
7 Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC
(4-4-4)
Week 14: W v. CHA
2
Last Week: 9
Highest Ranking: 5
The Hailstorm are trending up following a win over the Red Wolves last week but need to show a little more consistency to keep their trajectory moving forward.
8 Charlotte Independence
(5-6-3)
Week 14: T @ OMA
1
Last Week: 7
Highest Ranking: 1
The Independence were lucky to escape Omaha with a point after failing to record a shot on target.
9 Forward Madison FC
(4-4-5)
Week 14: ---
1
Last Week: 8
Highest Ranking: 3
The Flamingos were idle this week and their position in the power rankings matches their position in the league table.
10 South Georgia Tormenta FC
(4-4-5)
Week 14: ---
1
Last Week: 11
Highest Ranking: 2
Tormenta FC have failed to record a win since May 14. Despite scoring seven goals in their last four, the once top-of-the-table Ibises are struggling to finish off their opponents.
11 FC Tucson
(3-7-3)
Week 14: L v. RIC
1
Last Week: 10
Highest Ranking: 7
The schedule did Tucson no favors this week with matches against the teams in first and second. A draw against Greenville is an impressive result, but it could have been a win if not for a late goal.
