Madison's Maldonado earns Player of the Week honors with one goal, one assist performance

TAMPA, Fla. – USL League One today announced the Team of the Week for Week 12 of the 2022 regular season with Forward Madison FC midfielder Mikey Maldonado named Player of the Week. Maldonado tallied a goal and an assist in Madison’s 2-2 draw with Tormenta FC on Sunday evening.

On Sunday, Tormenta FC defender Jake Dengler opened the scoring early with a header from an extremely tight angle following a perfectly placed Adrian Billhardt corner in the 13th minute. After taking the lead into the half following a relatively quiet opening frame, Tormenta FC conceded a pair of  Madison goals from Mikey Maldonado and Rojay Smith.

Maldonado cashed in on a Pablo Jara error following a nice, long-distance service from 18-year-old  Alann Torres in the 56th minute. Maldonado then provided the assist on Madison’s go-ahead goal via  Rojay Smith, but the final equalizing goal came as South Georgia’s Dengler lofted a set piece down the pitch where Kingsford Adjei ripped a shot inside the far post. The riveting match ended in a 2-2 draw when the final whistle sounded.

“It’s always good to get a point on the road,” Interim Head Coach Neil Hlavaty said after the match. “We put ourselves in a position to obtain three, so there’s disappointment there. Given the reaction in the second half, the group can take positives from it. We needed to find a group reaction, and you saw that in the way we played. We had very impactful subs which definitely changed the game for us.”
