A five-match evening featured plenty of action

Week 9 of the 2022 USL League One season featured five matches that saw North Carolina FC continue its rise up the table, Greenville claim a big road win, FC Tucson snap its streak and a pair of exciting draws between Union Omaha and Northern Colorado along with Central Valley Fuego FC and Forward Madison FC.

North Carolina FC 2 - 1 Richmond Kickers

CARY, N.C. – North Carolina FC (4-3-1, 2nd) continued its steady rise up the League One table with a 2-1 victory at home over the Richmond Kickers (2-3-2, 7th). With the victory, North Carolina extended its unbeaten streak against Richmond to eight.

The league's all-time leading scorer broke the match open early, as Emiliano Terzaghi powered a perfect pass from Stephen Payne past Will Pulisic in goal. From there on out, however, it was the Garrett McLaughlin show. The 24-year-old jumped to the top of the Golden Boot race with a six-minute brace that featured a goal scored with the back of his head and a match-winning penalty conversion.

GREENVILLE TRIUMPH SC 1 - 0 CHATTANOOGA RED WOLVES SC

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Greenville Triumph SC (3-3-2, 6th) marched into Chattanooga and came out with a 1-0 victory over Chattanooga Red Wolves SC (3-3-2, 4th) on Saturday evening. With the win, Triumph SC extended its all-time advantage over the Red Wolves to 7-2-3. Despite the Red Wolves securing nearly 60% of the possession and dishing out over 100 more passes than Greenville, Triumph SC found the winner through a late Jacob Labovitz goal thanks in large part to a perfect pass from Don Smart.

Paul Christensen (GVL) – Denying all four of Chattanooga's shots on target, Christensen racked up five saves and earned the clean sheet. Christensen is now tied for the league lead in clean sheets.

South Georgia Tormenta FC 0 - 1 FC Tucson

STATESBORO, Ga. – FC Tucson (2-4-1, 9th) secured a 1-0 win over South Georgia Tormenta FC (3-3-2, 5th) to claim its first victory of the month. Tucson earned its first victory of the month and first clean sheet of the season thanks to an absolute wondergoal from 23-year-old Tyler Allen paired with a class performance from Carlos Merancio in goal.

Union Omaha 0 - 0 Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC

PAPILLION, Neb. – The first league and second overall meeting between Union Omaha (1-1-4, 10th) and Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC (2-2-2, 8th) resulted in a scoreless draw at Werner Park on Saturday evening. With just four shots on target between the pair, the midfield and defensive units stood tall to prevent a goal at either end. Despite their low standings in the table, both Omaha and Northern Colorado have played the fewest matches in League One this season.

Robert Cornwall (NCO) – Keeping Omaha out of the back of the net, Cornwall recorded five clearances, three interceptions and won six of seven ground and aerial duels.

Central Valley Fuego FC 1 - 1 Forward Madison FC

FRESNO, Calif. – After a scoreless first 80 minutes of the match, Central Valley Fuego FC (3-1-4, 3rd) and Forward Madison FC (1-3-4, 11th) both scored off of set pieces in the final 10 minutes of the match to tally a 1-1 draw in Fresno. The first came directly off a Jeremiah Streng free kick in which the Finland youth international sent the ball over the wall and bent it just under the bar to take the late lead. Fuego FC's Villyan Bijev would then go on to head in a Diego Casillas free kick in stoppage time to salvage the draw.

Villyan Bijev (CV) – The reigning Player of the Week recorded a score, dished out four corners and won six fouls while conceding zero.
