Union Omaha will travel to Saint Paul to take on Major League Soccer outfit Minnesota United FC at Allianz Field in the Round of 16 of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Omaha is the first League One club to compete in the tournament's Round of 16 and the first third division side to reach the Round of 16 since 2015.
Of the remaining 16 clubs in the tournament, Union Omaha have played the fewest matches this season across all competitions with eight, while Minnesota United FC are tied for the second most with 15. Omaha have not played in 10 days and are ninth in the League One table after a 1-1-3 start to the season. After losing three straight league matches, the Loons are ninth in the Western Conference and riding a two-match unbeaten streak after tying LA Galaxy and beating FC Dallas in recent days.
In previous rounds of the tournament, reigning League One champs Union Omaha took down the defending USL League Two champion Des Moines Menace before shocking Chicago Fire FC at Soldier Field and later besting Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC in Omaha. MNUFC started its 2022 U.S. Open Cup run by defeating Forward Madison FC at Breese Stevens Field before earning a last-minute winner against the Colorado Rapids after going down a man.
Minnesota United FC - Robin Lod: The Finland international midfielder leads the Loons with six goals in MLS play this season and has scored in each of his last three league matches.
Union Omaha - Rashid Nuhu: Nuhu has been solid early in the year for the defending league champions. With 15 saves in all competitions, the Ghanaian goalkeeper has played a key role in limiting opponents to just four goals in league play – a mark that is the lowest in League One.
