Charlotte extend unbeaten run to three; Tucson drop third straight

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte Independence (3-1-2, 3rd) were able to preserve its one-goal advantage despite going down a man in the 65th minute, downing visiting FC Tucson (1-4-1, 11th) 2-1 on Sunday evening. Now tied on points for first place in the league table, the Jacks continue their strong start to their first League One season, while FC Tucson drops its third straight contest – tied for its second longest such streak since its first League One season in 2019.

The Independence opened the scoring early, as reigning Player of the Month, Tresor Mbuyu sent in a deflected ball from a tight angle past Carlos Merancio in Tucson's goal in the 18th minute. FC Tucson responded in the latter half of the opening 45 minutes, as Tyler Moss curled in his first professional goal to even the scoreline. Just before the halftime break, however, the Independence struck again as Koa Santos unleashed a low shot from outside the penalty area to stun Merancio and FC Tucson. The only action of the second half saw Santos ejected after receiving his second yellow card in the 65th minute.
