Tormenta FC, Hailstorm on the rise

Following the conclusion of Week 5, the Richmond Kickers retain their spot atop the Power Rankings with the side still fresh off its victory over the Charlotte Independence.

The Monday-evening match – dominated by the visitors – saw the Kickers open the scoring less than six minutes into the contest as Leonardo Baima curled in a perfect cross to find the head of fellow countryman Emiliano Terzaghi who headed the ball past Adrian Zendejas in goal. Charlotte did equalize on a header of their own, as Shalom Dutey headed in a well-placed Ayrton Páez corner kick in the 37th minute. The finishing blow came from another perfect assist from Baima who slotted a ball to the feet of a wide-open Matt Bentley who converted the chance in the 55th minute.

While FC Tucson and Forward Madison FC take a slight tumble due to a pair of respective losses, Northern Colorado hailstorm FC, South Georgia Tormenta FC, the Charlotte Independence and Greenville Triumph SC are the only clubs to see a rise in a busy Power Rankings.

Summary

1 Richmond Kickers
(2-1-1)
Week 5: W @ CLT

Last Week: 1
Highest Ranking: 1
The Kickers are starting to look like the most complete league in the team; a solid midfield and attacking corps and the second fewest goals allowed in the league this season thanks to a star goalkeeper and stout defensive unit.
2 South Georgia Tormenta FC
(2-1-1)
Week 5: W @ TUC
2
Last Week: 4
Highest Ranking: 2
It’s still early, but Tormenta FC are certainly the early-season surprise in my book. Following an opening-day loss, South Georgia has rallied for five-straight unbeaten matches in all competitions.
3 Union Omaha
(1-1-2)
Week 5: L @ CLT
1
Last Week: 2
Highest Ranking: 2
Succumbing to another late Charlotte match winner, Omaha nearly escaped American Legion Memorial Stadium with three points before the Independence turned it on late.
4 Chattanooga Red Wolves SC
(2-2-1)
Week 5: L @ GVL
1
Last Week: 3
Highest Ranking: 1
The Red Wolves fell to winless Greenville thanks to a late penalty conversion from Aaron Walker. The loss means the Red Wolves have failed to top their regional rival in the past eight contests.
5 Charlotte Independence
(2-1-1)
Week 5: L v. RIC, W v. OMA
1
Last Week: 6
Highest Ranking: 5
Another early-season surprise, the Independence have vaulted into third place thanks to several strong individual performances. The club’s unique formula has given way to some exciting soccer in the Queen City.
6 Central Valley Fuego FC
(2-1-1)
Week 5: W @ MAD
1
Last Week: 5
Highest Ranking: 2
Finally back to its winning ways, Fuego FC earned an important three points on the road in Madison thanks to a combination of poor goalkeeping from FMFC and a quick reaction from first-time pro Jesus Partida.
7 Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC
(1-1-1)
Week 5: W @ NC
3
Last Week: 10
Highest Ranking: 6
The Hailstorm earned their first-ever win in League One on Saturday and Éamon Zayed’s boys are buzzing.
8 North Carolina FC
(1-2-1)
Week 5: L v. NCO

Last Week: 8
Highest Ranking: 4
NCFC have all the pieces, but they need to start clicking soon before the early-season hole is too deep to escape.
9 FC Tucson
(1-2-1)
Week 5: L v. TRM
2
Last Week: 7
Highest Ranking: 7
It doesn’t help that FC Tucson has faced off against three of the top four teams early this season, but Tucson needs to tighten up that defense if they want to get back in the win column.
10 Greenville Triumph SC
(1-2-1)
Week 5: W v. CHA
1
Last Week: 11
Highest Ranking: 8
Triumph SC are tied for the second most shots this season but have the fewest goals in the league to show for it. The side’s solid defense needs support from the attacking options up top before they can escape the bottom of the table.
11 Forward Madison FC
(0-1-3)
Week 5: L v. CV
2
Last Week: 9
Highest Ranking: 3
Although the Flamingos have been in just about every match this season and maintained an average possession advantage of 57.5%, the results just aren’t coming in yet.
