CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte Independence today announced an addition to their attack with the signing of midfielder Giuseppe Barone. Barone began his career with the Brookyln Italians and New York Cosmos before spending time with a trio of Serie B squads in Italy.

“Giuseppe is a clever flank midfielder who’s capable of beating players one-on-one and is excellent in combination with his teammates,” explained Charlotte Independence Head Coach, Mike Jeffries. “With his high soccer IQ and clever ideas in the final third, we look forward to Giuseppe contributing to our attack this season.”

The Brooklyn, N.Y. native began his career within the Brookyln Italians' youth ranks in 2002 before later joining the first team. Barone would move on to the New York Cosmos in 2020, making two NPSL appearances and a single U.S. Open Cup appearance before moving overseas.

From 2020 to 2022, Barone was a member of Serie B sides AC Perugia Calcio, US Salernitana 1919 and Ascoli Calcio 1898 FC. Despite dealing with long-term injuries and no playing time in Italy, Barone was a member of the 2021 Salernitana side that earned promotion to Serie A for the first time since 1999.

“I’m really excited to join the team and start with them in League One,” stated Barone. “I look forward to playing in front of our fans at home. We will give it everything we have every game, and I can’t wait to make great memories together this season!”
