TUCSON, Ariz. – FC Tucson announced on Monday it had signed goalkeeper Carlos Merancio, bringing the Mexican goalkeeper back to the club for the 2022 USL League One season. The signing is pending league and federation approval.

“I'm so excited to be back in Tucson because it's the best club I've ever been part of,” said Merancio. “I feel like it's my home.”

The 23-year-old rejoins Tucson having spent the 2021 season with the USL Championship’s Hartford Athletic, where he made one appearance while serving as a back-up to starter Jeff Caldwell. A Tucson resident, Merancio previously spent two seasons with the club and made 22 appearances, recording 66 saves and three shutouts 1.50 goals-against average.

“He's a top talent for me and somebody I really wanted to bring back to Tucson,” said Tucson Head Coach Jon Pearlman. “He's a Tucson guy and I think he's going to be a real asset to us moving forward as we build one of the strongest defenses in League One.”

FC Tucson previously announced it had picked up contract options on six players from the 2021 playoff team, including center backs Kaelon Fox and Luca Mastrantonio.

A native of Hermosillo, Mexico, Merancio began his club career in 2017 with Monarcas Morelia Premier in Mexico's Third Division.

“We're going to work very hard to make to the playoffs again and win the championship,” said Merancio.
