Host Elischa Edouard heads to Richmond to find out more about one of the unique rivalries in North American soccer

In the latest edition of Black Arrow FC Presents – part of the USL’s collaboration with Oakland-based Black Arrow FC focused on original, compelling stories at the intersection of soccer and black culture – host Elischa Edouard visits Richmond, Virginia to go inside the Henny Derby, a rivalry between the Richmond Kickers and Forward Madison FC that originated in the Black soccer communities in both cities.

Edouard first meets with Kickers player Devante Dubose, who returned to Virginia to play for the club after having previously competed at Virginia Tech in his college career. The Oakland native discusses the work and investment being done by the Kickers as one of the historic professional clubs in the United States, and the support the club showed as he returned from a torn ACL in the 2020 season while showing Edouard around some of Richmond’s notable landmarks, including the statue to native son Arthur Ashe.

Next up, Edouard sits down with River City 93 podcast host Elliot Barr, one of the founders of the Henny Derby and a longtime Kickers supporter. They dig into the ways he and other members of the Red Army have looked to expand the Black soccer experience in recent years, including bringing new voices and untold stories to the fore through podcasting and making strong connections with fans and supporters’ groups in other cities.

Finally, it’s time for the game itself as the Kickers host Forward Madison FC at City Stadium in a key late season game and the final Henny Derby of the season. Edouard meets with fans pregame and joins the River City Red Army in the stands for what proved to be a thriller between the two League One rivals.
