Deri Corfe scores late to lift Tucson to semifinal against Union Omaha

TUCSON, Ariz. — FC Tucson beat the Richmond Kickers for the second time in as many weeks, earning a 1-0 victory to advance to the semifinal round of the USL League One Playoffs, presented by TwinSpires. Charlie Dennis scored the lone goal of the match in the 86th minute Saturday night at Kino North Stadium.

FC Tucson clinched its postseason berth with a 4-2 win over Richmond on the final weekend of the regular season and then repeated the result, albeit not quite as emphatically, in its first postseason match since joining the professional ranks.

This week’s meeting was much closer, with neither side able to break the deadlock in the first half.

After the Chattanooga vs. North Texas quarterfinal went to extra time earlier Saturday night, it seemed Tucson and Richmond would need the additional 30 minutes as well.

Instead, Tucson’s Deri Corfe ended the match in regulation with a stunning left-footed finish from about 16 yards out in the 87th minute to secure Tucson’s place in the semifinals.

Corfe’s goal was Tucson’s only shot on target. Wallis Lapsley saved all five of Richmond’s shots on target to post an impressive clean sheet.

Tucson will visit regular season champion Union Omaha next weekend with a spot in the USL League One Final on the line.
