Rothrock’s volley sees Richmond and North Texas clinch playoff berths

TORONTO — Toronto FC II’s quest to qualify for the USL League One playoffs will go into extra time after the Young Reds beat the New England Revolution II 1-0 at the BMO Training Ground on Friday afternoon.

The result moved TFC II above the playoff line into sixth place and eliminated New England from playoff contention. Toronto’s win also clinched a playoff berth for both the Richmond Kickers and North Texas SC. Toronto will qualify for the playoffs if the Kickers beat or draw with FC Tucson in Arizona on Saturday night, with a draw leaving the Young Reds ahead of Tucson on goal differential. If FC Tucson wins, Toronto will miss the postseason.

After a scoreless first half, Toronto’s magic moment came on a stunning volley from Paul Rothrock in the 62nd minute. Luca Petrasso looped a cross from the left side over the head of Revolution II goalkeeper Joseph Rice and Rothrock volleyed it home to put the hosts ahead.

New England failed to reply. The Revolution would have clinched a playoff berth with a win but recorded just one shot on target in the match.

All four meetings between the sides this season ended in a 1-0 win for the home team.
