Third campaign concludes with individual records and a weekend ahead of compelling action

So, it all comes down to this.

With only Union Omaha’s place at the top of the standings assured, the final weekend of games in the USL League One regular season looks set provide a tremendous finish to what has been a fascinating third season for the league overall. From the middle of the year when it felt as though teams couldn’t keep from ending even with another – and the logjam that created in the standings – to now where over the past month there have been key victories every weekend to leave us still with half the playoff field yet to be decided, it’s been a big buildup to the postseason ahead.

There have been records – most notably, Richmond Kickers forward Emiliano Terzaghi taking the single-season goalscoring record with 17 tallies ahead of Saturday’s finale against FC Tucson. Richmond goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald this past week also set a new league record for single season saves with 86 in the campaign to pass Alex Mangels’ record of 85 in the inaugural season.

With nine assists this season, Chattanooga Red Wolves SC’s Ricky Ruiz could equal – or surpass – Arturo Rodriguez’s single-season record of 10 assists set for North Texas SC two years ago with one game to go as well.

Most important, though, has been having fans back at venues around the country experiencing the highs and lows live sport provides us each week. Good luck to everyone in this final weekend.

Here’s how everything looks right now. As always, feel free to come and yell at me on Twitter (@NJEMurray).

Summary

1 Greenville Triumph SC
(11-7-9)
Week 30: @ NC

Last Week: 1
Triumph SC couldn’t break down Chattanooga Red Wolves SC on Saturday, but the side is now undefeated in eight games and there is still a chance at second place on the final day.
2 Union Omaha
(14-5-8)
Week 30: @ NTX
1
Last Week: 3
Omaha made some uncharacteristic mistakes against Forward Madison FC in midweek before righting the ship and ending the Richmond Kickers’ winning run. First place is now assured with a game to spare.
3 North Texas SC
(10-8-9)
Week 30: vs. OMA
4
Last Week: 7
Taking victory while down to 10 men was something, doing so in the style NTSC did against the New England Revolution II did almost matching your visitors shot-for-shot in the second half is remarkable.
4 Richmond Kickers
(11-9-7)
Week 30: @ TUC
2
Last Week: 2
The Kickers’ winning run came to an end in Omaha, but they can still clinch a home playoff game this weekend with the right result on the road against FC Tucson.
5 FC Tucson
(10-10-7)
Week 30: vs RIC

Last Week: 5
Tucson should be very disappointed to have let two points slip away in Madison in second-half stoppage time, but they’ve still got their playoff life in their hands if they take victory against Richmond on Saturday night at home.
6 Forward Madison FC
(7-8-12)
Week 30: vs. CHA
6
Last Week: 12
It’s too little, too late for the Flamingos but getting a road victory against Union Omaha and a rousing comeback against FC Tucson on Saturday night was a pretty good week all things considered.
7 Chattanooga Red Wolves SC
(11-5-11)
Week 30: @ MAD
1
Last Week: 8
The Red Wolves held onto second place with a good defensive display against Greenville Triumph SC, but they still only have one win in their last five games overall.
8 Toronto FC II
(9-10-8)
Week 30: vs. NE
4
Last Week: 4
Player produces big performance against his former club is a really well-worn narrative, and Toronto’s playoff chances got dented severely by Shaan Hundal’s two-goal outing on Friday.
9 New England Revolution II
(11-12-4)
Week 30: @ TOR
3
Last Week: 6
The Revolution II have still got their playoff chances in their hands, but they’ve also now lost three out of four going to the final game of the season after Saturday’s 4-1 loss in North Texas.
10 Fort Lauderdale CF
(8-13-7)
Week 30: ---
1
Last Week: 11
Shaan Hundal moved into double-digit goals for the season on Friday against former club Toronto FC II, which was a pretty good way to round out the campaign.
11 North Carolina FC
(7-16-4)
Week 30: vs GVL
1
Last Week: 10
North Carolina earned a second win in the last three games by defeating Tormenta on Saturday night. It can’t catch South Georgia with a game to go, but it’s something good to build on.
12 South Georgia Tormenta FC
(8-14-6)
Week 30: ---
3
Last Week: 9
Five games without a win to close out the season is a real downer, but at least Tormenta has the promise of its beautiful new home facility waiting around the corner in the new year.
