NTSC pulls level on points with FC Tucson for final playoff spot courtesy of Rayo strike

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – North Texas SC boosted its chances of reaching the USL League One postseason with a 1-0 victory over Fort Lauderdale CF on Sunday night at DRV PNK Stadium.

The win saw NTSC pull level on points with FC Tucson for the sixth and final playoff spot with two matches to go, though the Tucson holds the tiebreaker. Fort Lauderdale CF was eliminated from playoff contention following Saturday night’s results.

After a scoreless first half, NTSC’s Gibran Rayo scored the decisive goal in the 55th minute, courtesy of a lovely low cross from the right wing by Kalil ElMedkhar. Rayo got a toe to the ball just ahead of FTLCF goalkeeper Drake Callender and placed his shot into the roof of the net. The goal saw Rayo pull level with Kazu for the team lead in goals with six this season.

Fort Lauderdale tried to make a match of it in the second half and came close to scoring in the 85th minute when George Acosta lashed a free kick from just outside the box onto the goalpost.

North Texas will host a critical match against New England Revolution II next weekend before wrapping the regular season at home against Union Omaha on October 30.
