GREENVILLE, S.C. –Greenville Triumph SC moved closer to clinching a playoff spot with a 1-0 victory over New England Revolution II on Saturday night at Legacy Early College.
Allen Gavilanes scored the lone goal of the match in the 57th minute to carry Greenville to its third-consecutive 1-0 victory. Triumph SC remains in third place in the League One Standings with two matches left to play. Greenville’s unbeaten run now stands at seven matches.
With Richmond also winning Saturday night, Greenville’s victory was a crucial one, setting the stage for a huge showdown with Chattanooga Red Wolves SC with second place on the line.
Gavilanes’ goal was his first of the season. He took a left-footed free kick from the right channel that made it through traffic in the 6-yard box and went in untouched. Greenville’s Lachlan McLean was there to tap it in from point-blank range but didn’t need to.
New England was reduced to 10 men late in the match when Collin Verfurth received his second caution of the match for slowing a Marios Lomis breakaway with a tactical foul.
Greenville’s attack was dominant on the night, outshooting New England 20-2 overall, 10-1 in shots on target. The score margin could have been larger if not for an impressive effort from Revolution II goalkeeper Joseph Rice, who tallied nine saves on the night.
