Argentine sets League One single-season record with 87th-minute winner at City Stadium

RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond Kickers forward Emiliano Terzaghi set a new single-season USL League One scoring record Saturday night, netting his 16th and 17th goals of the season to carry the Kickers to a 3-2 win over visiting Forward Madison FC at City Stadium.

The win was Richmond’s fifth-consecutive victory and saw the Kickers claim this year’s Henny Derby.

It was Madison that started the match on the front foot though, with Josiah Trimmingham scoring in the eight minute to break a 347-minute scoring drought. Trimmingham received the ball with his back to goal and beat his defender with a clever turn before on goal before firing his shot from a tight angle, beating Richmond goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald with a blast just under the crossbar.

The lead wouldn’t last though, with Richmond’s Chris Cole scoring a backpost header on a corner kick in the 32nd minute to tie the match.

The Kickers took the lead just before halftime, with Madison goalkeeper Phil Breno saving a shot from Richmond’s Jonathan Bolanos only to see Emiliano Terzaghi score the rebound for a 2-1 halftime lead. It was Terzaghi’s league-leading 16th goal of the season.

Madison started the second half much like the first, with a cross from Derek Gebhard forcing Richmond’s Esteban Calvo into an own goal, making the score 2-2 in the 47th minute.

It looked like the match was heading for a 2-2 draw until Terzaghi’s magic moment in the 88th minute with a sliding finish to top North Texas SC’s Ronaldo Damus’ record of 16 goals in the 2019 season.
