First-year pro’s standout finish against North Carolina FC claimed first in fan poll

TAMPA, Fla. – North Texas SC’s Nicky Hernandez has claimed the USL League One Fans’ Choice Goal of the Month award for September as his long-range strike against North Carolina FC at WakeMed Soccer Park last month finished top of the poll conducted over the past weekend.

Selected with the No. 15 pick of the 2021 Major League Soccer SuperDraft, Hernandez has made 20 appearances so far this season with North Texas, notching three goals. As the side visited North Carolina on September 26, his finish cutting in from the left flank to the top edge of the penalty area before firing a powerful shot to the right corner of the net didn’t just hit the highlight reel for the season, but also proved the difference in a key 1-0 win for the side as it tries to advance to the USL League One Playoffs.

Hernandez’s goal earned 56 percent of the poll conducted at USLLeagueOne.com to claim the award. South Georgia Tormenta FC’s Azaad Liadi finished second on 20 percent for his diving header against North Texas SC, while Union Omaha’s Damia Viader took third on 17 percent for a sharp near-post shot from the left side of the penalty area to the top-left corner against North Carolina FC.
