Triumph SC pressure pays off in 1-0 win that boosts side’s postseason aims

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Greenville Triumph SC scored in second-half stoppage time to take a 1-0 victory against Fort Lauderdale CF at Legacy Early College to continue a five-game winning streak that boosted the defending League One Title-holder’s chances of a return to the postseason this fall.

Triumph SC hit the woodwork twice in the opening 15 minutes as first Marios Lomis headed onto the left upright after a cross from the left by Allen Gavilanes and then Aaron Walker fired off the same post with a left-footed shot from 16 yards. The visitors had a good chance too in the 19th minute as Romeo Beckham’s delivery from the right found Shaan Hundal for a first-time shot that was parried over the crossbar by Greenville goalkeeper Paul Christensen.

The hosts went close again in the final minute of the first half as Jesus Ibarra broke into the right side of the penalty area and beat the goalkeeper with his finish, only for Cuban international Modesto Munoz to clear the shot to safety from inside the six-yard area.

Greenville’s pressure continued into the second half as the hosts build a sizeable advantage in attacking chances, but it wasn’t until the first minute of stoppage time that the pressure told. Veteran forward Don Smart received a return pass as he broke forward down the left side and his low ball into the penalty area was turned into his own net by Fort Lauderdale defender Aime Mabika, giving Greenville a vital three points in its pursuit of a playoff berth.

A visit to Union Omaha is the next fixture up for both sides. FTLCF will pay los Búhos a visit on Wednesday, while Triumph SC make the trip west next Saturday.
