Union Omaha defeats North Carolina FC 3-0 in Cary, NC in the first ever meeting between the teams

CARY, N.C. - In the first-ever matchup between the sides, Union Omaha defeated North Carolina 3-0 at home with two goals from Damia Viader and another from Ricky Rivera.

Viader opened up scoring early in the game with a rocket of a hit from just inside the 18-yard box, that narrowly escaped the hands of North Carolina’s goalkeeper Jake McGuire. Viader was able to snake his way through multiple defenders and hit the ball through a narrow gap in the defense.

McGuire made a vital save off a lofted shot from Omaha’s Devin Boyce in the 40th minute to keep NCFC in the game. What looked to be going over the crossbar took a dip and McGuire was able to react just in time to punch it over.

The first penalty kick of the season for Union Omaha came in the 53rd minute when McGuire came off his line to catch the ball but snagged Evan Conway inside the box. Viader calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right corner to earn his second of the night.

In the dying moments of the game, Omaha is able to score another, this time the goalscorer was Ricky Rivera. Rivera was able to float a header over the hands of McGuire and into the back of the net. The goal came off of a great header by Ferrety Sousa to kick off the play, and a perfectly placed cross by John Scearce.

With a Chattanooga Red Wolves SC tie or loss, Union Omaha will sneak its way to the top of the USL League One table after tonight’s three-goal victory.

Both teams are back in action at home next Saturday, with NCFC hosting the New England Revolution II and Omaha taking on Toronto FC II.
