RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond Kickers edged FC Tucson in a tight 1-0 contest that saw Kickers forward Emiliano Terzaghi score from the spot in the 19th minute, sealing a win to close the month of July for the hosts.
The hosts got off to the better start between the two sides and tested FC Tucson goalkeeper Wallis Lapsley early, but Richmond midfielder Victor Falck's low driven effort toward the near post was denied by the showstopper. Then, in the 18th minute, Terzaghi's forward run into the penalty area drew a foul by Tucson defender Kaelon Fox, and the Argentine forward was successful from 12 yards out giving Richmond the lead.
FC Tucson came out of the halftime break the more aggressive of the two sides and tested Kickers 'keeper Akira Fitzgerald multiple times in the opening 20 minutes of the second half. First, Tucson forward Tobenna Uzo had a curling effort from just outside the penalty area saved, then midfielder Charlie Dennis was denied twice in a matter of seconds after a weaving run toward the center of goal saw both a rolled effort from near the penalty spot and a close range follow up from the right side of goal saved by Fitzgerald. Though Tucson persisted in pressuring the Kickers goal, the hosts' early advantage was enough to give them all three points at City Stadium.
Up next for the Kickers is a trip north of the border to take on Toronto FC II next Friday. Tucson will now head back west to prepare for a home game against North Texas SC on Saturday, August 7.
