A week with only four games still has plenty to keep your eye on

Given the recent standard in League One - which has seen six or seven matches a week - Week 14’s offering of four games may seem a bit paltry at first glance. But that quartet of contests across Friday and Saturday nights offers plenty of intrigue in its own right, and with the midtable still looking crowded, there are valuable points up for grabs.

Here are three storylines in particular to watch out for in Week 14.

Nice To Meet Ya

When the New England Revolution II host Toronto FC II on Friday night to kick off the weekend’s action (7 p.m. ET | ESPN+), it will mark the first-ever meeting between the two teams. With New England having played its first season in 2020 while the Young Reds were on a pandemic-caused hiatus, we haven’t yet had a chance to see how these two talented young teams match up against each other.

At the moment, TFC II sits three points above Revs in the standings, but the Canadian club has played one more game than its Massachusetts-based counterpart. Their proximity in table positioning adds another layer of intrigue to this game, with each club looking to place itself firmly in and amongst the playoff hunt as the season nears its midway point.

Flipping the Script

Saturday features two sets of rematches. First, Greenville Triumph SC hosts North Carolina FC (7 p.m. ET | ESPN+) in the sides’ third meeting already this season. In both of the previous two, Triumph SC won 2-1. In its last two games, NCFC has shown an improvement in form, picking up four points. The team is steadily getting better, but tests don’t come much tougher in League One than an away day in Greenville, and the team will need to be at its best to reverse its fortune against its Carolina rivals.

At the same time that matchup takes place in the Palmetto State, FC Tucson will visit Chattanooga Red Wolves SC (7 p.m. ET | ESPN+). When those two teams met in the Arizona desert on June 12, Tucson did well to erase a two-goal deficit before a late Juan Galindrez strike won the game for Chattanooga. Under interim boss Jon Pearlman, Tucson grabbed an impressive 2-1 win over Fort Lauderdale last weekend, and will look to build on that momentum with a result in Chattanooga. But the Red Wolves have won three and drawn one of their four home games so far this season, so the visitors face a big ask.

The Return of El Plástico

The season’s first edition of “El Plástico” - the nickname for the matchup between Forward Madison FC and North Texas SC, which stems from Toyota Stadium’s policy against allowing plastic birds inside the grounds - promises to be a good one on Saturday (9 p.m. ET | ESPN+), as both teams find themselves a bit lower in the table than they’d like to be.

Historically, this fixture has gone the way of North Texas. The Lone Star State club has won 4 of the 6 previous meetings between the pair, including doing the double over the Flamingos last season. That final game was decided on a last minute penalty kick at Madison’s then-home ground of Hart Park, and was the only time in this matchup’s history where the away team has won.

The Flamingos will be aiming to pick up points in Texas for the first time in their history come July 10, and it should make for a highly entertaining game. Madison arrives off the back of a 1-0 win over New England, while North Texas will be looking to put back-to-back losses in the rearview mirror.
