Omaha, Chattanooga sit 1-2 ahead of massive Saturday night showdown

If there’s one thing to watch for on Saturday night as Union Omaha and Chattanooga Red Wolves SC – the current top two teams in the USL League One Power Rankings – square off at Werner Park, it might be this.

Which side gets the opening goal?

Because if it’s the hosts – who will enter the game a perfect 3-0-0 on home turf this season – then it could be the biggest test of the Red Wolves’ comeback mojo so far this season.

As we noted last week, the Red Wolves’ sustained attacking pressure has meant their late goals – which have accounted from eight points from losing positions so far this season, the most in League One – have had a substantial impact on an impressive season so far.

But if there’s a team you might not want to fall behind against, it’s Head Coach Jay Mims’ Union lineup. Los Buhos have spent only 80 minutes trailing so far this season and have dropped only two points from winning positions this campaign. The trend has been if Omaha gets a lead, you’re going to have to do well to recover.

That makes for one of numerous compelling storylines in a game you certainly should be tuning into as part of your Fourth of July weekend.

Here’s how everything else looks right now. As always, feel free to come and yell at me on Twitter (@NJEMurray).

Summary

1 Union Omaha
(6-1-3)
Week 13: v. CHA

Last Week: 1
Los Buhos got back to winning ways against Tucson and now prepare for one of the biggest games of July as third-place Chattanooga Red Wolves SC comes to visit Werner Park on Saturday.
2 Chattanooga Red Wolves SC
(5-1-2)
Week 13: @ OMA

Last Week: 2
No late-game magic this time for the Red Wolves against Greenville, but you can be sure Blake Frischknecht was glad to finally get off the mark for his new club.
3 Greenville Triumph SC
(5-2-3)
Week 13: @ NE
1
Last Week: 4
Greenville won’t like taking only two points from its back-to-back games last week, even against stout opposition, and Sunday’s game doesn’t look quite as simple as it did a couple of weeks ago with the Revolution II rolling.
4 South Georgia Tormenta FC
(5-7-0)
Week 13: v. TOR, v. NC
1
Last Week: 3
Tormenta’s winning streak was going to come to an end at some point, but they’re going to need to turn the tables on Toronto on Wednesday to keep themselves above the playoff line.
5 New England Revolution II
(4-4-1)
Week 13: @ MAD, v. GVL
4
Last Week: 9
Consecutive victories and shutouts and five goals have quickly propelled the Revolution II into the playoff positions. Sunday’s home game with Greenville will be another big test of those postseason aspirations.
6 Richmond Kickers
(3-4-3)
Week 13: v. NTX
1
Last Week: 5
It would have been amazing to see Hernán González head home an equalizer from Akira Fitzgerald’s cross in stoppage time on Friday night, but it just wasn’t to be for the visitors.
7 Forward Madison FC
(3-2-4)
Week 13: v. NE

Last Week: 7
Yes, the Flamingos haven’t won in five games now, but we’re going to take the glass-half-full view here that a point in Greenville is generally a good thing, and there’s plenty of opportunity to make a quick move up from there.
8 Fort Lauderdale CF
(5-6-2)
Week 13: @ TUC
2
Last Week: 10
Fort Lauderdale ended up gaining a four-point split (1-1-1) out of its three meetings with Toronto FC II thanks to Mitchell Curry’s late winner on Saturday, which keeps FTLCF in the middle of the playoff positions for now.
9 Toronto FC II
(3-4-4)
Week 13: @ TRM
1
Last Week: 8
Toronto soared against Tormenta FC only to receive a quick return to ground against Fort Lauderdale on Saturday. It’s going to have to be wary of a South Georgia side that will want payback on Wednesday night.
10 North Carolina FC
(1-6-1)
Week 13: @ TRM
2
Last Week: 12
How ‘bout North Carolina FC? That first win is going to take a lot of pressure off this side as it tries to bridge the large gap between itself and the rest of the league.
11 North Texas SC
(3-4-2)
Week 13: @ RIC
5
Last Week: 6
North Texas can be very, very good at times. When it’s not – and it certainly was not against the Revolution II – it’s hard to think it’s the same team that thumped Greenville recently.
12 FC Tucson
(2-4-3)
Week 13: v. FTL
1
Last Week: 11
Tucson keeps battling away, but there’s just not enough quality being created in front of goal right now to earn results, especially against a side as good as Omaha.
