FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Fort Lauderdale CF and Toronto FC II dueled to an entertaining 2-2 draw on Wednesday night at DRV PNK Stadium.
Venton Evans opened the scoring for the home side in the 26th minute. The Fort Lauderdale forward picked up a pass from Brian Rosales near midfield, and with no one stopping him, dribbled all the way to the penalty area and fired an accurate low strike to the far post.
It looked like Fort Lauderdale would hold the lead until halftime, but TFC II's leading scorer Garrett McLaughlin had other ideas. McLaughlin benefited from a smart layoff from teammate Mehdi Essoussi and bagged his fourth goal of the season to equalize with the last kick of the first half.
The second half followed the same pattern, with Fort Lauderdale scoring first but the Young Reds drawing level later on. Evans provided the assist for the home side's second goal, beautifully setting up Shaan Hundal for his fifth of the season.
It took until the 81st minute for TFC II to equalize for the second time on the night, when Jayden Nelson calmly tucked away a one-on-one chance with the goalkeeper to earn his side a point.
The two teams will meet again in just three days at TFC II's temporary home ground of Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Fla. That game on Saturday will be the second of three June matchups between the Young Reds and Fort Lauderdale.
