CASA GRANDE, Ariz. - Propelled by a pair of goals four minutes apart, FC Tucson earned its first win of the 2021 League One season on Wednesday night, beating Toronto FC II 2-1 at Grande Sports World.
Toronto had more of the play early on, but a quick-fire double for Tucson saw the visitors take a two-goal lead midway through the first half.
João Delgado opened the scoring with a sensational chip in the 24th minute, and Deri Corfe added to the advantage moments later when he poked in a loose ball during a corner kick scramble.
TFC II didn't waste time pulling themselves back into the game. Last Saturday, it was Themi Antonoglou setting up Garrett McLaughlin for the Young Reds, but those roles were reversed on Wednesday night.
McLaughlin flicked a clever ball to Antonoglou following a turnover, and the 19-year-old Canadian took a great touch to put himself through before firing a precise low strike to the far post. It was Antonoglou's first professional goal, four days after picking up his first professional assist.
TFC II continued to have more of the possession in the second half, but both sides enjoyed their fair share of scoring chances. Despite some late pressure, Tucson was able to hold on to claim all three points, a vital bounce back performance after a heavy defeat to Fort Lauderdale CF in Week 6.
The two teams will meet again in 10 days' time in Tucson, but each is back in action this Saturday as well. Toronto heads to the Lone Star State for a rematch from their first game of the season against North Texas SC, while Tucson travels east to play North Carolina FC.
