With two contests down, there's a very familiar look to the top of the League One standings

If Greenville Triumph SC’s opening game of the season showed the club’s defensive solidity was still well and good, last Saturday’s 4-0 win against North Texas SC showed the attacking potential the offseason arrivals for the defending League One Title holders offer.

A pair of goals for League One Player of the Week Marios Lomis highlighted Greenville’s fourth four-goal outing in its league history and pushed the club up to first place in the League One standings. By now, that’s a familiar spot for Head Coach John Harkes’ side, which led wire-to-wire a season ago and appears to have the intent of something similar this year.

Now what most neutrals may be hoping for is both Triumph SC and Union Omaha to arrive at their nationally-televised showdown on ESPN2 on Sunday, May 16 with identical 3-0-0 records. Greenville gets North Carolina FC this weekend in John Bradford’s first game at the helm for NCFC, while Omaha faces a pair of games, first Fort Lauderdale CF on Friday night before a midweek trip to the New England Revolution on May 12.

In terms of a national showcase, you couldn’t ask for much more than that.

Here’s how everything looks right now. As always, feel free to come and yell at me on Twitter (@NJEMurray).

Summary

1 Greenville Triumph
(2-0-0)
Week 5: @NC

Last Week: 1
Last year, Greenville’s only four-goal performance came against Orlando City B. Putting in this kind of performance against a likely playoff contender was impressive to say the least.
2 Union Omaha
(1-0-0)
Week 5: @FTL

Last Week: 2
Omaha got the chance to see Fort Lauderdale in action this Sunday night, and will have learned it can’t overlook Shaan Hundal and company.
3 Chattanooga Red Wolves SC
(0-0-0)
Week 5: @NTX
1
Last Week: 4
This is by default after North Texas and Richmond’s defeats, we’ll see if the Red Wolves live up to the billing on Saturday against NTSC.
4 Forward Madison FC
(0-0-0)
Week 5: @TUC
2
Last Week: 6
Firing in four goals in the club’s return to Breese Stevens Field – even against amateur competition – was a great way to end preseason. The serious tests start Saturday in Tucson.
5 North Texas SC
(1-1-0)
Week 5: v. CHT
2
Last Week: 3
Four goals for in the season-opener, four goals against in the second outing. It certainly hasn’t been an uneventful start for Head Coach Eric Quill’s side.
6 Fort Lauderdale CF
(2-2-0)
Week 5: v. OMA
2
Last Week: 8
Shaan Hundal has always had potential, but I’m thinking no-one saw the 21-year-old Canadian notching four goals in FTL’s first four games of the season.
7 Richmond Kickers
(1-2-0)
Week 5: v. TRM
2
Last Week: 5
Richmond got a slice of good fortune for its equalizer in Fort Lauderdale, but failed to kick on afterward. The visitors didn’t record a shot in the final 10 minutes and stoppage time in their second consecutive loss.
8 South Georgia Tormenta FC
(1-2-0)
Week 5: @RIC
3
Last Week: 11
That was much more like it from Tormenta, who almost doubled their shot total from the opening two games of the season in their 3-1 win against Tucson.
9 North Carolina FC
(0-0-0)
Week 5: v. GVL

Last Week: 9
NCFC took a 2-1 win against the Championship’s Charleston Battery in its final preseason outing. Is that a good omen for the visit of Greenville on Saturday night?
10 FC Tucson
(0-1-0)
Week 5: v. MAD
3
Last Week: 7
Tucson is going to be looking for a sharper defensive display as it heads home after Saturday night’s tough opener against South Georgia. Tormenta FC’s three goals came on only 0.94 Expected Goals, according to American Soccer Analysis.
11 New England Revolution II
(1-1-0)
Week 5:--
1
Last Week: 10
The Revolution II get a second weekend off to prepare of Union Omaha’s visit next Wednesday night at Gillette Stadium.
12 Toronto FC II
(0-0-0)
Week 5: --

Last Week: 12
You wonder if Toronto FC II is looking at former player Shaan Hundal’s early season production and wondering if it let go too soon?
