South Georgia broke its scoreless streak to pick up its first points of the season

STATESBORO, Ga. - A trio of fine finishes saw South Georgia Tormenta FC earn its first win of the new season, claiming a 3-1 victory over FC Tucson at Erk Russell Park on Saturday night.

Tormenta failed to score in each of its first two League One matches this season, but showed none of that offensive sluggishness in the first half against Tucson. Josh Phelps found himself in the right place at the right time to open the scoring 10 minutes in, and Curtis Thorn doubled the advantage 20 minutes later, firing in a clever pullback from Adrian Billhardt.

But a momentary defensive lapse allowed Tucson back into the game just before halftime. Shak Adams broke in behind the South Georgia backline, and calmly dispatched his one-on-one opportunity with Tormenta goalkeeper Pablo Jara closing him down.

Tucson put up a valiant fight in search of an equalizer in the second half, but a late stunner from Marco Micaletto would seal the result for South Georgia. The midfielder's superb strike from the edge of the penalty area arrowed beyond Wallis Lapsley in the Tucson goal to ensure Tormenta picked up its first points of the nascent season.

Up next for the Statesboro side is a trip north to face the Richmond Kickers on May 8, while Tucson will host Forward Madison FC for its 2021 home opener at Kino North Stadium on the same night.
