As the action gets ready to pick up, the Power Rankings are back for the new season

Hello, and welcome to the 2021 USL League One Power Rankings.

We might be fashionably late, but that’s given us a chance to gather our thoughts on what has already transpired, and what may yet to be as the season gets into full swing with this weekend’s three-game slate of action.

And we start with Greenville Triumph SC at the top, and their opponent this Saturday night at City Stadium the Richmond Kickers at No. 3 to get things going. Did we arrange our arrival to coincide with the first big game of the year? (No, that was just luck).

Anyhow, here’s how everything looks right now. As always, feel free to come and yell at me on Twitter (@NJEMurray).

Summary

1 Greenville Triumph
(0-0-0)
Week 3: @RIC
If you were the team standing with the trophy at the end of last season, you get to start the new season on top of the Power Rankings. Them’s the rules.
2 Union Omaha
(0-0-0)
Week 3: TRM
Los Buhos got a lot right in their inaugural season and potentially got better with the arrival of Greg Hurst and Conor Doyle. Watch out.
3 Richmond Kickers
(1-0-0)
Week 2: W, 3-0 @NE
Week 3: GVL
We got a sneak-peek at the Kickers last week, and it only added to the impression we were getting from their preseason results that they’re going to be a solid contender.
4 North Texas SC
(0-0-0)
Week 3: FTL
It can be difficult to figure out preseason results sometimes, but if you’re a League One team faring well against solid Championship clubs, you might be onto something.
5 Chattanooga Red Wolves SC
(0-0-0)
We don’t get to see the Red Wolves for a couple of weeks. When we do, the big question is going to be who fills the goalscoring shoes Greg Hurst left behind.
6 Forward Madison FC
(0-0-0)
The Flamingos are going to be one of the most interesting teams to follow in League One, or anywhere for that matter. They’re going to get their work in between now and May 8.
7 Fort Lauderdale CF
(1-1-0)
Week 2: W, 1-0 @TRM
Week 3: @NTX
It didn’t feel like Fort Lauderdale deserved to lose its opener, which made its win against South Georgia on the road last week a nice boost for the side. North Texas will be a test on Saturday.
8 FC Tucson
(0-0-0)
There’s a real sense of optimism emerging from the desert this preseason after the way last season ended. That opening game on May 1 against Tormenta should be an interesting one.
9 North Carolina FC
(0-0-0)
There’s some really solid returning experience here, but it’s going to be very interesting to see how the club’s pivot toward its young standouts is going to work.
10 South Georgia Tormenta FC
(0-1-0)
Week 2: L, 0-1 FTL
Week 3: @OMA
A major defensive misjudgment against Fort Lauderdale cost Tormenta dearly last Saturday. Now they get to visit Omaha, which is going to be a tough trip.
11 New England Revolution II
(1-1-0)
Week 2: L, 0-3 RIC
The Revolution II didn’t look overly convincing against Fort Lauderdale despite the win, and then got rolled over by Richmond. There are some things to be worked out here.
12 Toronto FC II
(0-0-0)
It’s going to be a real interesting season for the itinerant Toronto FC II squad. See you on May 22 in Arizona.
