Three storylines to focus on as the League One season gets into gear

Hello and welcome to the first edition of The Front Three, a new weekly column giving you three quick things to watch for ahead of each weekend of League One action. With six teams playing in a matchweek for the first time this season, here’s what to focus on during Saturday’s slate.

Richmond’s Approach To Possession (Or Lack Thereof)

The Richmond Kickers comfortably won their opening game over the New England Revolution II 3-0 last weekend, and they did so without needing to see much of the ball. The Kickers only had 34 percent possession in the match, and completed just 214 passes to New England’s 483.

But as soccer shows us time and again, possession only matters if you do something with it. Richmond’s front line picked specific moments to press from what was otherwise a deep-lying line of confrontation, and the team’s opening goal resulted from forcing a New England defender into an errant pass to spark a counterattack.

This week’s opponent, defending title-winner Greenville Triumph SC, is likely to pose a sterner test than the talented but inexperienced Revolution II squad. It should be interesting to see if Richmond Head Coach Darren Sawatzky employs a similar setup or looks to have his side set the tempo themselves at home (6:30 p.m. ET | ESPN+).

Owls Old and New

Union Omaha’s fanbase seems to have already developed an “us vs. everybody” mentality heading into the season, and after a very impressive inaugural campaign, the team is looking to prove it’s ready to claim the League One title. In pursuit of that, Omaha made two of the offseason’s most intriguing additions: bringing in striker Greg Hurst and midfielder Conor Doyle from Chattanooga.

Hurst’s eight goals were second only to Emiliano Terzaghi in League One last season, and Doyle brings Major League Soccer experience. Both of those players could make their Omaha debuts against Tormenta FC at Werner Park on Saturday (7 p.m. ET | ESPN+).

Omaha’s squad didn’t have many (if any) holes in it last year, and they’ve kept everyone around. If Hurst and Doyle do feature, keep an eye on how they fit in with a system and a set of personnel which worked wonders for Head Coach Jay Mims last season.

North Texas 2.0

North Texas has been home to some of the best young talent in American soccer during the last two years, but most of its big names have now moved on. During the offseason, standouts Brecc Evans, Ronaldo Damus, and Arturo Rodriguez all signed for clubs in the USL Championship, and All-League defender Justin Che joined Bayern Munich II.

Simply put, there are a lot of big pairs of shoes to fill at Globe Life Park. But it wouldn’t be wise to doubt North Texas. Head Coach Eric Quill dealt with a fair amount of player turnover last season, and despite a slow start, the team surged late to finish in third place. There’s a lot of new faces in the North Texas dressing room, and the team’s position in the table is likely to depend on how quickly the team is able to come together this season. Our first chance to find out is when they host Fort Lauderdale CF this Saturday (8:30 p.m. ET | ESPN+).
