Forward Madison FC has re-signed defender Gustavo Fernandes, adding a fourth returner to the 2021 roster, the club announced Friday.

After signing his first professional contract with Madison last March, Fernandes appeared in 11 of the club’s 16 games in 2020. Primarily an outside back by trade, Fernandes played center back, fullback, and as a holding midfielder under former Head Coach Daryl Shore last season.

“Anytime the coaches needed me to go somewhere, I would do it, no questions asked,” Fernandes said. ‘It was an amazing first year, regardless of everything going on. I wouldn’t have traded it for anything.”

A native of West Babylon, New York, Fernandes comes from a soccer family. His father hada 10-year professional career in Brazil, while his older brother, Leo was a member of the Tampa Bay Rowdies 2020 squad. Prior to joining FMFC, Fernandes was the centerpiece of Stony Brook University’s defense and played with the Ocean City Nor-easters and the Tampa Bay Rowdies U23s in USL League Two.

After coming off of the bench for the majority of his appearances in his rookie season, Fernandes is ready to take on a bigger role in his second year with the club.

“I want to become a more consistent player, become more of a voice in the locker room,” he said. “I really want to give something to the Madison fans. I want to play in front of them and give all I can for them.”

Fernandes joins fellow returners Josiah Trimmingham, Michael Vang, and Noah Fuson on Forward Madison's current 2021 roster.
