Two goals in quick succession lifted the Flamingos past New England

Two second-half goals scored two minutes apart helped Forward Madison FC come from behind to defeat the New England Revolution II Saturday night at Hart Park.

The visitors started brightly and Conner Presley put the game’s first shot on target in the 15th minute, a blistering strike that forced Chris Brady into a sprawling save that sent the shot over the crossbar and out for a corner kick.

Presley forced Brady into action on the ensuing set piece after a short corner kick routine sprung him free at the top of the box. The 16-year-old goalkeeper was equal to it again and parried it around the near post and out for another corner.

Paulo Jr. grew into the match in the Madison attacking third and rang a shot off the crossbar from distance in the 20th minute. The veteran winger had Keegan Meyer beat, but his strike bounced off the bar and stayed out.

Brady made another impressive save in the 21st minute, this time denying Colby Quinones at his near post after getting a strong left hand to the defender’s well-struck shot from inside the penalty area.

New England broke the deadlock eight minutes later as Damian Rivera played Justin Rennicks through on goal after the forward made a clever run in behind the Madison back four. Rennicks nutmegged Brady to score his fourth goal of the season.

Paulo Jr. hit the crossbar again in the 38th minute, this time curling a shot from the top of the box that beat Meyer but couldn’t beat the woodwork and the Revolution II went into the halftime break with a 1-0 lead.

Ryan Spaulding and JC Banks narrowly missed chances at either end just after the second half whistle, with both players striking well-hit shots just wide of the target.

Paulo Jr. hit the woodwork for a third time in the 70th minute, striking a blistering first-time that bounced off the far post and back into play.

The hosts finally found a breakthrough in the 81st minute through Noah Fuson. Louis Bennett’s clever first-time pass played Fuson through on goal and the forward made no mistake, tucking the ball past Meyer to score his first goal of the season.

Jiro Toyama gave the Flamingos the lead two minutes later with a brilliant strike from distance. Toyama took two big touches forward before striking an out-swinging shot that beat Meyer at his near post to push his side in front.

New England pressed for an equalizer, but failed to put a shot on frame in the final ten minutes of the match and Forward Madison held on for the 2-1 victory.
