Four-goal attacking display led by center back Josh Phelps in new role up front

South Georgia Tormenta FC finished the home portion of its schedule with an emphatic win, defeating the New England Revolution II 4-0 Wednesday night at Erk Russell Park.

Tormenta FC came out like a house on fire, scoring three times in the opening 35 minutes. The first goal came after center back turned center forward Josh Phelps chased down a loose ball and held up his defender before finding Nil Vinyals at the top of the box. Vinyals took a touch and smacked home a half volley to give the hosts an early lead.

Phelps got himself on the scoresheet 11 minutes later, cleaning up a rebound after Keegan Meyer spilled Luca Mayr’s shot from the right side of the box.

Jad Arslan added a third in the 34th minute, putting his foot through a partial clearance that fell kindly to him to beat Meyer at his near post.

With Tormenta FC controlling the match from the outset, New England didn't register a shot on goal until the second minute of stoppage time in the first half. The shot came from distance as Tigao Mendonca worked a short free kick routine and struck a low driven shot on frame, but Pablo Jara scooped it up with relative ease to send his side into the break with a 3-0 lead.

Phelps continued to look dangerous in the attacking third on the other side of halftime and put another shot on frame in the 50th minute after Mayr found him free near the penalty spot, but Meyer saved and held the driven effort.

Jordan Skelton went close from a set piece ten minutes later, but his close range shot narrowly skipped wide of the near post.

New England’s best chance to pull a goal back came from a free kick near the right sideline in the 76th minute. Hikura Fujiwara served a dangerous in-swinging ball toward the back post but no Revs II players could make contact with the cross to turn it goalwards and the three-goal deficit remained.

Second half substitute Devyn Jambga made it 4-0 in the 81st minute, cutting in on his right foot before curling a shot that tipped the underside of the crossbar and went in to score his first goal for the club.

Back-to-back wins have moved Tormenta FC into seventh place in the League One standings, opening the opportunity for the side to finish in the top half of the table depending on results around the league this weekend. In addition to consecutive wins, South Georgia has kept two clean sheets in two matches since club captain Lars Eckenrode’s return to the lineup.
