New England's fastest goal of the season was canceled out by a second-half North Texas equalizer

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - A second-half North Texas SC equalizer canceled out the fastest goal of the New England Revolution II's season so far, as two in-form sides each needing a win in their respective postseason pushes were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw on Friday night at Gillette Stadium.

Damian Rivera got things going for the Revolution II just nine minutes into the contest. After picking up the ball in midfield, Rivera drove forward and wasn't met by any North Texas defenders. He accepted the invitation to shoot by curling a wonderful strike inside the far post from the edge of the penalty area.

The visitors entered halftime down by a goal, but came out of the locker room and immediately improved their performance. The equalizer for North Texas arrived four minutes into the second half, when Nicky Hernandez danced between defenders and poked the ball past Keegan Meyer in the New England goal.

The rest of the game was fairly balanced, with both sides creating a number of decent chances and both goalkeepers making some superb saves. Ultimately though, neither could come up with the winning goal, and just as it did when the teams met in Texas earlier this season, the match ended all square.

A draw is a bit of a disappointing result for each of the two clubs, as both were in need of maximum points in pursuit of a League One Final berth. The single point for North Texas means that the defending title-winners can't be eliminated from contention no matter the other results of this match weekend, but New England will see its postseason hopes extinguished if either Richmond or Omaha picks up a win.

With two games left on the schedule, each team hits the road for an important midweek matchup next Wednesday. Revolution II travel to South Georgia to take on Tormenta FC, while North Texas visit Forward Madison FC.

SCORING SUMMARY
  • NE (9'): Rivera (second), unassisted
  • NTX (49'): Hernandez (second), assisted by Rodriguez
