NTSC moves into fourth place after third consecutive victory

North Texas SC earned its third consecutive victory, defeating the Richmond Kickers 2-1 Saturday night at Globe Life Park.

Richmond’s only shot on target in the first half came just after the opening whistle as Emiliano Terzaghi struck a shot from distance that sent Carlos Avilez scrambling to his right, but the North Texas goalkeeper got to the shot and the rebound to save his side from an early deficit.

Justin Che narrowly missed opening the scoring for North Texas in the 5th minute, flicking Arturo Rodriguez’s low corner kick towards goal but missing just high.

Richmond goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald was called into action in the 12th minute as Rodriguez skipped past a couple of defenders and struck a shot from close range that took a deflection, forcing Fitzgerald to react quickly to keep it out.

North Texas opened the scoring nine minutes later as Thomas Roberts beat his defender to the endline on a short corner and hit a well-struck shot on frame, forcing Fitzgerald to parry it into danger. The rebound fell to Alex Bruce who hammered it home from six yards out to give the hosts the lead.

NTSC doubled its advantage in first half stoppage time as Edwin Munjoma capped off a brilliant sweeping move through midfield. Munjoma played a clever give-and-go with Derek Waldeck inside the penalty area before slotting a left-footed shot past Fitzgerald for his first goal of the season.

The Kickers started the second half well and earned a corner kick on the 50 minute mark. Ryley Kraft found Terzaghi with a flat delivery, but the forward’s flicked header went just wide of the back post.

Kraft delivered two well-struck set pieces five minutes later, narrowly missing the top corner on the first free kick and forcing Avilez into a save on the second.

The visitors found a breakthrough in the 60th minute after Oalex Anderson was brought down in the penalty area. Terzaghi converted the ensuing penalty kick, sending Avilez the wrong way and slotting it home to score his league-leading tenth goal of the season.

Richmond’s best chance at an equalizer came in the first minute of second half stoppage time after failed a clearance from a corner rolled out to Matt Bolduc who struck a stinging first-time shot just wide of Avilez’s goal.

North Texas closed out the remainder of stoppage time and earned its third consecutive victory to move within three points of second-place Richmond.
