Midfielder scored first professional goals to help Richmond to crucial home victory

A pair of first-half goals from rookie Jonathan Bolanos helped the Richmond Kicker defeat Orlando City B and move back into second place in the League One standings Wednesday night at City Stadium.

The Kickers started brightly and Ivan Magalhaes and Greg Boehme both had chances to open the scoring within the first quarter of an hour. Magalhaes flicked a header from a Ryley Kraft free kick that narrowly missed the far post, while Boehme skied a failed clearance that fell to him unmarked near the penalty spot.

Golden Boot leader Emiliano Terzaghi did well to create space and put a shot on frame from 20 yards out in the 26th minute, but Austin Aviza got down quickly to his right to push the effort around the post and out for a corner.

Bolanos buried the first chance that fell to him, another failed clearance that bounced out to the top of the 18-yard box on the ensuing corner kick. The 22-year-old midfielder put his foot through the ball, smashing a half volley past Aviza to score his first goal of the match.

Bolanos doubled his tally just before halftime, slotting a penalty kick past Aviza after being brought down in the box by Franklin Carabali.

Boehme had a chance to push the lead to three goals less than ten minutes into the second half when Matt Bolduc found him with a cutback near the top of the 18-yard box, but the midfielder’s first-time shot missed the target.

Moises Tablante was shown a second yellow card in the 68th minute for a late challenge on Emiliano Terzaghi, forcing Orlando to play down a man for the final 20 minutes of the match.

Five minutes after the sending off, Julian Kennedy created OCB’s best scoring chance up until that point, dribbling past a group of Kickers before firing a shot that floated just wide of Akira Fitzgerald’s right post.

Richmond had a chance to put the game to bed after Oalex Anderson was brought down inside the penalty area in the 89th minute, but Aviza denied Stanley Alves’ penalty shot attempt to keep the deficit at two goals.

Wilfredo Rivera scored a consultation goal for OCB in the third minute of second half stoppage time, cleverly redirecting Jonathan Rosales’ low cross from the right flank past Fitzgerald to score his third goal of the season.

With the win, Richmond regains sole possession of second place in the League One standings, while the loss keeps Orlando in last place.
