Greenville Puts One Foot in Final With Trademark Win Over OCB

After a frustrating first half, Triumph SC found a way through the Orlando defense

GREENVILLE, S.C. - A pair of quick-fire second half goals from Lachlan McLean and Alex Morrell sealed a 2-0 win for Greenville Triumph SC over Orlando City B on Friday night at Legacy Early College, putting Greenville on the doorstep of a second-straight League One Final appearance.

Triumph SC nearly got off to a perfect start with less than two minutes on the clock. JJ Donnelly played in McLean, and the Australian forward blazed a shot just over the bar. Minutes later, Morrell bent his shot from the edge of the area wide of the post as the home side continued to pile on the pressure early.

Yet despite dominating possession and outshooting OCB 20-3 in the first half, Greenville was unable to find a way to score before the break.

A stellar goalkeeping performance from Orlando's Austin Aviza kept Triumph SC's attackers frustrated as the match wore on, but McLean finally broke the deadlock in the 65th minute. He picked up a pass from Morrell, wriggled past an OCB defender and shot low beyond Aviza to put Greenville in front.

The lead was no less than Triumph SC deserved, and it took them just four minutes to double it. Morrell applied the finishing touch for the second goal, receiving the ball in space before driving into the penalty area and hitting a powerful strike to the far post.

Those tallies coupled with a ninth clean sheet of the season gave Greenville the victory. It was another performance in the style that has quickly become Triumph SC's trademark - the attack remained patient and eventually found a way through a stingy opposition defensive effort, while the backline allowed the other team's forwards very few chances.

The result moves Triumph SC to the cusp of the 2020 League One Final - if Forward Madison FC drops points on Saturday, Greenville will officially clinch its place in the title game. Even if that doesn't happen, John Harkes' side needs only two points from its final three matches to qualify for the Final.

At the other end of the table, Orlando City B could become the first team eliminated from League One Final contention if the Richmond Kickers beat New England Revolution II on Saturday.

Both teams hit the road for upcoming fixtures next week, with Greenville making the cross-country trip to face FC Tucson and OCB traveling to take on Richmond.
