Kickers pull within a point of second place with home victory

Emiliano Terzaghi scored twice to lead the Richmond Kickers to a 2-1 comeback victory over Fort Lauderdale CF Wednesday night at City Stadium.

Fort Lauderdale started the better of the two sides, jumping out to a quick 1-0 lead in the 5th minute through Ricky Lopez-Espin. Ian Fray created the chance with a nice piece of skill to skip past his defender and get to the endline before setting Lopez-Espin up for his seventh goal of the season from close range.

Richmond had an opportunity to answer immediately as Terzaghi was brought down inside the box in the eighth minute, but the Argentinian striker struck the spot kick wide of the right post.

Terzaghi turned provider moments later, playing a teasing ball across the six yard box to find David Diosa unmarked at the back post. Diosa connected with the cross, but his shot drifted wide of the back post and the visitors maintained their lead.

The Kickers finally broke through in the 26th minute as Terzaghi held off his defender before finding the side netting of the back post from a tight angle to level the score.

Minutes after the equalizer, the Richmond contingent appealed for a second penalty after Fray appeared to block Stanley Aves’ shot from near the top of the 18-yard box with his arm, but the referee waved away the appeals and the two sides went into the break level at a goal a piece.

Terzaghi scored his league-leading ninth goal of the season nine minutes into the second half to push the Kickers in front, nodding Ryley Kraft’s in-swinging corner home from six yards out.

Fort Lauderdale had a chance to pull themselves level again in the 72nd minute from a free kick about 20 yards from goal. Sami Guediri curled the free kick on frame, forcing Akira Fitzgerald to parry it away into traffic but Jerome Kiesewetter’s header off the ensuing rebound went wide.

Guediri’s effort from the free kick was Fort Lauderdale’s last shot on target in the match and the Kickers took all three points. With the win, Richmond moves into third place in the League One table, a point behind second-place Chattanooga Red Wolves SC with two games in hand. Fort Lauderdale remains in eighth place with six matches remaining.
