Greenville holds firm at the top after top-two victory against Red Wolves

TAMPA, Fla. – I said last week we were going to learn a lot about Chattanooga Red Wolves SC in the past seven days. And, in fairness, we did.

We learned that of all the teams in League One, they might be the best equipped to challenge Greenville Triumph SC. Victories against the Richmond Kickers and Union Omaha will do that for you.

But we also learned that Triumph SC is still the favorite to lift the League One title at the end of the season. Greenville’s 1-0 win against the Red Wolves on Saturday afternoon created a seven-point lead in the standings for last year’s finalists, and they’re getting it done in a very similar way to how they did a season ago.

Strong defense? Check. Greenville has more than double the shutouts of any other team in the league with seven in 11 games and has only conceded six times overall.

Timely finishing? Check. Triumph SC has won six one-goal games this season. It finds ways to get the goal it needs, just like Noah Pilato’s excellent late finish against the Red Wolves.

Greenville can’t get complacent as strong as its position is, and I think that’s unlikely given the way the team and Head Coach John Harkes have gone about their work this season. Their marker is down. The question now is, who’s going to match it?

Here’s how everything else looks this week. As always, feel free to come and yell at me on Twitter (@NJEMurray).

Summary

1 Greenville Triumph SC
(8-2-1)
Week 11: NTX

Last Week: 1
Greenville picked up the gauntlet that was laid down by the Red Wolves and earned its third consecutive victory. Seven points clear with five games to go, Triumph SC looks in very good shape indeed.
2 Chattanooga Red Wolves SC
(5-3-3)
Week 11: @MAD

Last Week: 2
That was a tough defeat to Greenville, but the Red Wolves are still in very strong position to earn a rematch in late October. Finding the right response in Madison is going to be key.
3 Richmond Kickers
(4-2-2)
Week 11: FTL, @OMA
1
Last Week: 4
The Kickers can make up ground in a hurry after Saturday’s postponement with two games this week. Taking victory away to Omaha on Saturday to prolong the Owls’ recent downturn would be a major boost for Richmond’s playoff hopes.
4 South Georgia Tormenta FC
(3-4-4)
Week 11: --
4
Last Week: 8
Tormenta FC is still a bit up-and-down, but its only loss in its last five games is against Triumph SC and winning on the road in Fort Lauderdale isn’t an easy task.
5 Union Omaha
(4-2-4)
Week 11: RIC
2
Last Week: 3
We’ve reached the first major bump in the road for Los Buhos. With a week to recuperate before hosting the Kickers on Saturday, finding a way back into the win column is going to be essential.
6 Forward Madison FC
(3-3-2)
Week 11: @TUC, CHA
1
Last Week: 5
Madison finds itself in a gray area where it’s not quite among the contenders but has games in hand that can carry it there. This week is going to be crucial, especially Saturday’s home game with Chattanooga.
7 North Texas SC
(2-2-5)
Week 11: @GVL
1
Last Week: 6
Good news: NTSC is undefeated in its last four outings. Bad news: Three of those games have been drawn, meaning little ground has been made up in the playoff chase.
8 FC Tucson
(3-5-2)
Week 11: MAD, FTL
1
Last Week: 9
Tucson gets two home games this week against the teams one place above and one place below it in the standings. If a move is coming toward playoff contention, now’s the time for it to happen.
9 New England Revolution II
(2-6-2)
Week 11: @ORL
1
Last Week: 10
The Revolution II have earned victories against the teams currently in first and third place in the standings. If only they could figure out how to do it in the rest of their games as well.
10 Fort Lauderdale CF
(3-4-2)
Week 11: @RIC, @TUC
3
Last Week: 7
This might be a bit harsh, but you can’t lose home games against the team you’re vying with for a playoff spot and hope to get where you want to go.
11 Orlando City B
(1-5-3)
Week 11: NE

Last Week: 11
Orlando’s now gone a month-and-a-half without a win, which is giving us flashbacks to 2019.
