The South Georgia side overcame an early deficit to win 2-1

Goals from Curtis Thorn and Luca Mayr helped South Georgia Tormenta FC overcome an early deficit to defeat Fort Lauderdale CF 2-1 on Saturday night at Inter Miami CF Stadium.

Fort Lauderdale came flying out of the gate in the fifth minute thanks to 16-year-old Edison Azcona. Azcona's pressure led to a South Georgia mistake near midfield, and he picked up the ball and drove forward at the exposed Tormenta goal. His shot deflected heavily off a Tormenta defender and trickled over the line to put the Floridians in front.

Tormenta didn't hang their heads for long under new Head Coach Ian Cameron. Following a corner in the 19th minute, Marco Micaletto whipped in an excellent, pinpoint cross from the right flank. The pass found an unmarked Thorn at the back post, who tapped it in to level the score.

South Georgia then took the lead through Luca Mayr just past the hour mark, and this time it was Thorn providing the assist with a cross from the right flank. Mayr rose well and powered his header into the net.

That goal would hold up as the winner despite a late red card to Tormenta's Jordan Skelton. The result lifts Tormenta to 13 points, two ahead of Fort Lauderdale on 11 (though Fort Lauderdale has played two fewer games).

Fort Lauderdale won't have to wait long for an opportunity to bounce back, as they'll head north to play the Richmond Kickers on Wednesday. Tormenta have a two-week break before they face Union Omaha on the road, and will be encouraged by the upcoming rest and a positive result in Cameron's first match in charge.

SCORING SUMMARY
  • FTL (5'): Azcona (third), unassisted
  • TRM (19'): Thorn (first), assisted by Micaletto
  • TRM (62'): Mayr (third), assisted by Thorn
