Goals from Justin Rennicks and Nicolas Firmino earned New England a 2-0 win

Justin Rennicks' first League One goal and Nicolas Firmino's late insurance tally handed New England Revolution II a surprise 2-0 win over Union Omaha on Saturday night at Werner Park.

Revs II shocked the home crowd when it took the lead after just 11 minutes through Rennicks. The U.S. U-20 national team forward latched onto the end of a clever line-splitting ball from Orlando Sinclair, picked his head up to see where Omaha goalkeeper Rashid Nuhu was, then calmly slid his finish beyond Nuhu.

In the second half, New England thought it had doubled its lead when Firmino curled in an incredible free kick, but the referee ruled the goal out for obstruction. Omaha later got a taste of that same medicine, when the Owls had a goal ruled out for a foul on New England goalkeeper Joe Rice.

Omaha pushed hard for a late equalizer and looked like it would find one, but Revs II withstood the pressure. A late red card for Omaha's Ethan Vanacore-Decker opened the home side up defensively, and Firmino got his goal with the final kick of the game to seal the three points.

It's New England's second win of the season, both of which have come against teams in the top three of the table. The postseason is likely beyond reach for this team, but it has shown real flashes of promise this season and the young players in the squad will rightfully take pride from a performance that finally lifted them out of last place in the league.

On the other side, Omaha has now lost back-to-back games after avoiding defeat during the first eight games of the campaign. Jay Mims' side remains in third and a strong contender for a place in the League One Final. Omaha have a crucial match next Saturday against fellow contenders Richmond Kickers - a win in that game would more than stop the skid the Owls are on at the moment.
