McLean, Keegan score in 2-0 win

Greenville Triumph SC extended its lead at the top of the USL League One table to six points with a 2-0 win over Forward Madison FC Sunday afternoon at Legacy Early College.

Forward Madison started brightly with Don Smart forcing Dallas Jaye into a full stretch save at the near post in the 18th minute.

Greenville responded as Lachlan McLean scored his second goal in as many games to open the scoring in the 25th minute. The first-year pro collected Omar Mohamed’s bouncing cross before hitting a clever half volley past goalkeeper Philipp Marceta to give the hosts an early 1-0 lead.

Jaye made a brilliant fingertip save just before halftime to keep JC Banks’ low driven shot out of the bottom right corner of his goal, sending the Triumph into the break with a 1-0 lead.

JJ Donnelly nearly doubled Greenville’s lead in the 67th minute, getting a foot on Alex Morrell’s cross from the right flank, but Marceta did well to get down to his right and keep it out.

Moments later McLean looked to have a brace when he skipped past multiple Madison defenders and Marceta, but he struck his shot too softly and Eric Leondard was able to recover and clear it off the line.

Jake Keegan doubled the lead in the 80th minute after Aaron Walker sprang him free in behind the Madison defense with a clipped pass over the top. Keegan collected the pass and struck a low shot past Marceta to score his fourth goal of the season.

Keegan’s goal was enough as Jaye earned his league-leading sixth clean sheet of the season and Triumph SC earned three points at home. The loss was Forward Madison’s first since August 8th and keeps the side in fifth place, five points off second-place Union Omaha.
