16-year-old tallied a goal and an assist in 2-0 win

Fort Lauderdale CF secured its first-ever victory over its in-state rivals Orlando City B with a 2-0 victory Saturday night at Inter Miami CF Stadium.

The action started immediately following the opening whistle, with Ricky Lopez-Espin getting a chance at goal in the third minute. Eduardo Sosa played Lopez-Espin in behind the defense, but goalkeeper Mason Stajduhar did well to close down the space quickly and get a hand to Lopez-Espin’s shot to keep it out.

Fort Lauderdale’s Edison Azcona opened the scoring two minutes later, curling a shot out of Stajduhar’s reach and into the side netting of the far post from the left side of the penalty area.

Aleksander Gluvacevic had a chance to pull Orlando level in the 37th minute, but his looping header went just over the bar and Fort Lauderdale went into the break with a one-goal lead.

The hosts doubled its lead five minutes into the second half as Azcona found Lopez-Espin with a clever pass to put him through on goal. Lopez-Espin rounded Stajduhar on the dribble before slotting the ball into the open net to score his sixth goal of the season, leaving him one off league leader Emiliano Terzaghi.

Jerome Kiesewetter nearly added a third around the 75 minute mark after a quick exchange of passes at the top of the 18-yard box, but his shot went wide.

Fort Lauderdale goalkeeper Andre Zuluaga closed out quickly to smother the ball at Jose Quintero's feet after he was played through on goal in the 75th minute, preserving the clean sheet.

Orlando were reduced to ten men in the 77th minute when Franklin Carabali was shown a second yellow card for a late challenge near midfield.

With the win, Fort Lauderdale moves into sixth place in the League One standings, five points off the second playoff spot. The loss extends Orlando’s winless streak to seven games and keeps the club in 10th place in the table.
