Stellar second half sees Chattanooga take sole possession of third place

Second-half substitute Marky Hernandez led Chattanooga Red Wolves SC to a come-from-behind-victory Saturday afternoon as the side topped the Richmond Kickers 2-1 at CHI Memorial Stadium.

The Kickers started on the front foot as Emiliano Terzaghi scored his sixth goal in as many games in the 13th minute. The Argintinian volleyed home Matt Bolduc’s cross from 12 yards out to give Richmond an early lead and extend his lead in the Golden Boot race.

Eight minutes later Chattanooga’s Ronaldo Pineda curled a left-footed shot from the right side of the 18-yard box that pinged off the post and was eventually scrambled clear by the Richmond defense.

Less than ten minutes into the second half, Nashville SC loanee Tanner Dieterich leveled the score. Moments after entering the match, Hernandez dribbled down the left flank and threaded a pass to Dieterich inside the penalty area. Dieterich did well to shake off his defender and hit a shot on the half volley, beating goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald at his near post to draw the Red Wolves level.

Josue Soto went close in the 62nd minute, but his curling effort from a free kick 20 yards out missed high and left Fitzgerald untroubled.

Steven Beattie broke the deadlock in the second minute of stoppage time, capping off another brilliant run by Hernandez on the left side of the field. Hernandez beat his defender to the endline before dropping a pass back to Beattie near the penalty spot and the Irishman found the bottom corner of Fitzgerald’s goal to seal three points for Chattanooga at home.

With the win, Chattanooga moves above Richmond and into third place in the League One standings, but the Kickers have a game in hand. The two sides will meet again on the final day of the regular season in Richmond.
