Terzaghi, Kraft score in second consecutive match as Richmond gains ground on league leaders

A 10-man Richmond Kickers side won its fourth consecutive match Saturday night, beating Greenville Triumph SC 2-1 at City Stadium. With the win, Richmond cut Greenville’s lead at the top of the table to three points and has two games in hand.

Following the opening whistle, players from both sides remained still, united against racism, and in support of equality, diversity and compassion, for the opening seven minutes of the match.

The Kickers opened the scoring eight minutes after play resumed when Matt Bolduc beat his defender on the right flank and squared a pass to Emiliano Terzaghi who was free near the top of the six-yard box. Terzaghi finished past Dallas Jaye to score his fifth goal of the season and fourth in four matches, leaving him tied atop the Golden Boot race.

Greenville equalized near the half hour mark through a set piece. Carlos Gomez curled a dangerous corner kick into a group of bodies near the six-yard box and the ball deflected off of Brandon Fricke’s face and beat Akira Fitzgerald.

The Triumph had a chance to put themselves in front five minutes later after Jake Keegan picked up a wayward back pass by Ian Antley. Fitzgerald rushed out to close down the angle on Keegan, parrying his shot straight to Gomez. Gomez put the rebound on frame but his shot was right at Ivan Magalhaes and the Richmond center back cleared the effort off the line.

Ryley Kraft broke the deadlock in first-half stoppage time, beating everyone to Luke Pavone’s shot that rang off the right post and smashing the rebound into the top corner of Jaye’s goal.

In search of the Triumph’s second equalizer of the match, Gomez beat his defender at the top of the penalty area but struck his shot into the wrong side of the side netting ten minutes into the second half.

Richmond’s Gianluca Cuomo nearly doubled the hosts’ advantage in the 63rd minute, forcing Jaye into a full stretch save to deny his first-time shot from 20 yards out.

Antley was shown his second yellow card of the match in the 74th minute for a late challenge on Greenville’s Lachlan McLean, leaving the Kickers to play down a man the final quarter of an hour.

Despite the man advantage, the Triumph’s struggles in the final third continued. McLean created the best chance for an equalizer in the 83rd minute, but Fitzgerald handled his strike from the top of the box with relative ease and Greenville suffered its second consecutive loss.
