Three first-half goals propelled Chattanooga to emphatic win over New England

Marky Hernandez struck twice in the span of nine minutes to lead Chattanooga Red Wolves SC to a 4-0 win over New England Revolution II Saturday afternoon at CHI Memorial Stadium.

Following the opening whistle, players from both sides remained still, united against racism, and in support of equality, diversity and compassion, for the opening seven minutes of the match.

Chattanooga scored the game’s opening goal five minutes after play resumed as Ricardo Zacarias rose above the crowd to nod Ricky Ruiz’s in-swinging corner kick past Keegan Meyer. The driven header was Zacarias’ first career League One goal.

The Red Wolves continued to turn the screw in the attacking end, creating a flurry of chances before Marky Hernandez doubled the lead. Hernandez gets credit for the tally, but Greg Hurst did the work. The Scot made a dazzling run towards the endline, skipping past multiple defenders on his way before finding Hernandez with a cutback inside the six-yard box.

Nine minutes later, it was Hernandez who showed off his footwork. Zacarias played Hernandez through on goal and the crafty winger calmly dribbled past an on-rushing Meyer and rolled the ball into the opening goal to give Chattanooga a 3-0 lead before halftime.

New England struggled to create throughout the day and failed to put a shot on target. Alex Mangels earned a shutout in goal for the Red Wolves without being credited with a save in the match.

Second-half substitute Steven Beattie added a fourth goal in the 88th minute, finishing off Ronaldo Pineda’s cutback after the midfielder made a clever run into the penalty area to score his first goal of the 2020 season. Beattie, who led the Red Wolves in scoring in 2019, missed the first four matches of the season with an injury.

With the win, Chattanooga moves into sixth place in the League One standings, while New England sits in 11th place tied on points with 10th place Orlando City B.
