Greenville positions itself as the team to beat after victory against Red Wolves

TAMPA, Fla. – Sometimes it can be dangerous to make comparisons too early in a season. But since we’re basically a third of the way through the League One season at this point, I’m going to do it anyway.

Greenville Triumph SC’s 13 points from its first five games is almost identical to the maximum points that North Texas SC took from its first five games in 2019. We all know how that ended up for NTSC at the end of last season.

What I’m saying is being a frontrunner – especially in a season like this – is a very good thing, and after its 1-0 victory on Saturday against Chattanooga Red Wolves SC, another team with title aspirations, Triumph SC has set itself up as the team to beat. Can there be improvements? Of course, but when the margin for error in reaching the League One Final game is as slim as it is, holding a six-point cushion on your nearest rivals is a great spot to be in.

Here’s how everything else looks this week. As always, feel free to come and yell at me on Twitter (@NJEMurray).

Summary

1 Greenville Triumph SC
(4-0-1)
Week 6: FTL

Last Week: 1
Four wins out of five to start the season is outstanding in any league. Greenville has the ideal balance of solid defense and enough attack to carry them forward.
2 Union Omaha
(2-0-1)
Week 6: MAD, @NTX

Last Week: 2
The weather spoiled our chances of seeing Union take on the Red Wolves last Wednesday night. Hopefully conditions will be ideal for what looks like a great potential game against Forward Madison.
3 Richmond Kickers
(2-1-1)
Week 6: @NE
2
Last Week: 5
You had to know that Kickers Head Coach Darren Sawatzky was feeling extra-good after his side beat Tucson on Saturday night. What’s more, it’s put Richmond right at the top of the pack chasing Greenville.
4 Chattanooga Red Wolves SC
(1-1-2)
Week 6: TRM
1
Last Week: 3
The Red Wolves are still strong contenders despite their first loss of the season but will be disappointed not to have made more of their first-half chances in Greenville.
5 North Texas SC
(1-1-2)
Week 6: @FTL, OMA
1
Last Week: 4
Three games without a win and back-to-back home draws aren’t what North Texas was looking for. Need to tighten up at the back, lads.
6 Forward Madison FC
(1-2-1)
Week 6: @OMA, ORL
3
Last Week: 9
That’s the Madison side we were expecting to see this season. The big question now is whether the Flamingos can carry that form into a big Wednesday night game with Union Omaha?
7 Fort Lauderdale CF
(1-2-1)
Week 6: NTX, @GVL
1
Last Week: 8
Earning a draw on the road against your in-state rival isn’t a bad result for a first-year side and it keeps Fort Lauderdale moving in the right direction.
8 Orlando City B
(1-1-1)
Week 6: TUC, @MAD
2
Last Week: 10
It’s been more than a calendar year since Orlando claimed four points from two games, which is baby steps for sure, but at least some kind of positive sign.
9 New England Revolution II
(0-1-2)
Week 6: RIC
2
Last Week: 11
Congratulations, Isaac Angking, you now have everyone’s attention. New England may not have its first win yet, but that was a great attacking display against North Texas.
10 FC Tucson
(1-3-0)
Week 6: @ORL
4
Last Week: 6
They’ve all come by a single goal, but three consecutive defeats are three consecutive defeats. Not a great start after the promise of the opening victory.
11 South Georgia Tormenta FC
(1-3-2)
Week 6: @CHA
4
Last Week: 7
Three consecutive defeats including an absolute thumping by Forward Madison does not bode well for the playoff hopes of Tormenta FC, I’m afraid.
