Wilfredo Rivera and Ricky Lopez-Espin found the back of the net following a two-hour rain delay as Orlando City B and Fort Lauderdale CF drew 1-1 Saturday night in the first-ever League One match at Osceola County Stadium.
Play was suspended due to lightning in the 11th minute and resumed following a two hour and six minute delay. Shortly after the resumption, Rivera scored his second goal of the season, creating space at the top of the box before striking a low shot that deflected off of a Fort Lauderdale defender and beat goalkeeper Dylan Castanheira.
Rivera nearly doubled his tally in the 36th minute, but his attempt from the right side of the 18-yard box went just wide.
Lopez-Espin equalized moments later, closing down Castanheira and deflecting the goalkeeper’s attempted clearance off his shins and into the goal.
Orlando’s Aleksander Gluvacevic was played through on goal near the hour mark, but his left-footed strike found the wrong side of the post and hit the side netting.
Lopez-Espin hit a well-struck shot on frame in the 61st minute after a good piece of play through the Fort Lauderdale midfield, but Castanheira was equal to it, punching the strike out of danger.
Francisco Raggio played Lopez-Espin through in the dying moments of the match, but again the center forward’s shot found only the hands of Castanheira and the match ended 1-1.
With the draw, Orlando City B sits level on points with Fort Lauderdale CF at four but has a game in hand on its in-state rival. The Florida sides sit in eight and ninth place in the League One standings.
