Lopez Espin’s spectacular lob from midfield the difference in South Georgia

Fort Lauderdale CF earned its first win in club history Saturday night, beating South Georgia Tormenta FC 2-1 at Erk Russell Park.

The South Florida side opened the scoring in the 41st minute as 16-year old Edizon Azcona capped off a brilliant counter attack, finishing past Pablo Jara for his first goal of the season.

Tormenta FC nearly equalized in first half stoppage time as Marco Micaletto found Nil Vinyals with a clever cut back, but Dylan Castanheira made a fingertip save to keep Vinyals’ first-time-shot out of the top corner.

Rhys Williams found Micaletto free near the penalty spot in the 62nd minute, but the midfielder’s effort was high and wide of Castanheira’s goal.

Ricky Lopez Espin produced the decisive goal in spectacular fashion on 76 minutes, lobbing Jara from midfield to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Mikie Rowe pulled a goal back for Tormenta FC in second half stoppage time, striking Jordan Skelton’s knock down past Castanheira to score his first goal of the season.

Josh Phelps’ header from a free kick found the frame in the dying moments of the match, but his effort was right at Castanheira and Tormenta FC’s comeback bid fell short.

Tormenta FC sits in third place following back-to-back losses in Week 4, while Fort Lauderdale’s first win of the season moves them up to ninth in the USL League One table.
