Triumph SC move five points clear of Tormenta FC in first place

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Triumph SC left it late, but a scrappy JJ Donnelly goal in the 91st minute was enough to seal an important 1-0 home win for Greenville over South Georgia Tormenta FC on Wednesday night at Legacy Early College.

Four of the previous five matches between the two sides had ended 0-0 or 1-0, and the sixth all-time meeting held true to that trend. The first 70 minutes of play were cagey and produced just one shot on goal, a cross-turned-shot from Tormenta's Rhys Williams which nearly caught Greenville goalkeeper Dallas Jaye wrong-footed.

But the game came to life in the final 20 minutes. Both sides hit the crossbar in the closing stages: the Triumph's Noah Pilato nearly capped off a brilliant team move with a powerful strike that clanged off the woodwork, and South Georgia's Mikie Rowe fired a strike off the frame of the goal from a tight angle just minutes later.

As he has done so often for Triumph SC, Jaye made a fantastic save in a one-on-one situation with Tormenta's Daniel Jackson in the 89th minute, sticking out his left boot at the last second to prevent the ball from rolling in. At the time, that save looked to have preserved a draw.

Greenville striker JJ Donnelly had other ideas, pouncing on a loose ball during a scramble in the box and slotting it home to win the match in stoppage time. A product of Tormenta FC 2 in USL League Two, Donnelly's goal was his first of the season for Triumph SC, and it earned his side an important win as they reached the one-quarter mark of the League One season.

Triumph SC now sit in first place in the League One table on 10 points, while Tormenta FC remain in second five points behind. Both sides have played two or three more games than the other nine teams in the league, but Greenville have put themselves in an especially strong position in the early stages of the season.
