Evan Conway’s 74th minute goal was enough as Union Omaha earned its first win in club history Saturday night, defeating League One Title Holders North Texas SC 1-0 at Werner Park.
Omaha started brightly as Devin Boyce pulled a stinging shot just wide in the second minute of the match.
Ethan Vanacore-Decker nearly broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute after a quick exchange of passes with Juan Mare sprung him free inside the penalty area, but North Texas goalkeeper Luis Zamudio made a smart save to keep out his toe-poke from close range.
North Texas’ best chance of the first half came from a set piece at the top of the 18-yard box. David Rodriguez struck a low shot under the wall, but Rashid Nuhu was ready for it and made a routine save.
Conway gave Omaha the lead midway through the second half, knocking Vanacore-Decker’s peach of a cross into an empty net at the back post.
North Texas created few chances following Conway’s goal and never really threatened Nuhu. The visitors’ best chance to equalize came as Ronaldo Damus led a quick counter attack after an Omaha corner kick, but Los Buhos recovered well and North Texas failed to produce an end product.
Nuhu earned his second consecutive clean sheet to start the season as Omaha captured its first win in history. With the victory, Union moves up to fourth place in the League One standings, while North Texas falls to fifth.
