Greenville, North Texas making strong opening case with weekend victories

Two weeks gone, and the top of the League One standings are looking pretty familiar so far. So are the faces on the field, with Ronaldo Damus picking up right where he left off for North Texas SC with a goal to highlight the club’s first game at Globe Life Park and Jake Keegan finding the net for Greenville Triumph SC in its home opener.

Best story of the weekend, though? How about hometown kid A.J. Valenzuela coming through with the game-winner for FC Tucson to kick off its new campaign in Fort Lauderdale? Big ups to you, my man.

So, now we’ve see almost everyone in action, here’s where our bigger first impression lies. As always, feel free to come and yell at me on Twitter (@NJEMurray).

Summary

1 Greenville Triumph SC
(2-0-0)
Week 3: @MAD

Last Week: 1
Never hurts to get some help in finding the back of the net, but Jake Keegan getting his second in as many games is a very good early sign for Greenville.
2 North Texas SC
(1-0-0)
Week 3: @OMA

Last Week: 2
There was no revenge to be had for Madison as North Texas kicked off its title defense with a win, and about as comprehensive a performance you could ask for without a shutout.
3 Chattanooga Red Wolves SC
(0-0-1)
Week 3: TUC
2
Last Week: 5
The Red Wolves came one final save from earning a road victory to start the season, but they should still have hope revved up for their first game at CHI Memorial Stadium.
4 South Georgia Tormenta FC
(0-0-1)
Week 3: RIC, ORL
2
Last Week: 6
Goal from Marco Micaletto? Check. Goal from one of the newcomers brought in to bolster your attack? Check. It might not have been the result Tormenta FC was hoping for, but there are still positive signs.
5 FC Tucson
(1-0-0)
Week 3: @CHA
3
Last Week: 8
Yeah, there was plenty of time to break down Fort Lauderdale after it got reduced to nine men, but on the road in your first game as a squad under a new head coach Tucson did find a way to get it done.
6 Forward Madison FC
(0-1-0)
Week 3: GVL
3
Last Week: 3
There’s no shame in losing on the road to the defending champions to start the season, but Madison is going to need to regroup quickly with Greenville up next this weekend.
7 Union Omaha
(0-0-1)
Week 3: NTX
3
Last Week: 4
Los Buhos put five shots on goal but couldn’t find the back of the net in New England. Omaha got a point from the contest, and the scoreless draw will quickly be forgotten if the side scores its first goal in club history at Werner Park this weekend.
8 New England Revolution II
(0-0-1)
Week 3: --
1
Last Week: 9
Pretty solid start from the Revolution II, now how about we get those sights on the shooting gear fixed before the next outing?
9 Richmond Kickers
(0-1-0)
Week 3: @TRM, FTL
2
Last Week: 7
There’s no worse feeling than being the masters of your own downfall. I get the suspicion Richmond will bounce back strongly on Tuesday night against Tormenta FC.
10 Orlando City B
(0-0-0)
Week 3: @TRM
1
Last Week: 11
Orlando gets to move up a place by default because…
11 Fort Lauderdale CF
(0-2-0)
Week 3: @RIC
1
Last Week: 10
… their in-state rivals got out to a great start and then just imploded. Two red cards for two cautionable offenses apiece by Josh Saavedra and Ian Fray before halftime is impressive in the worst kind of way.
